i do not swim. but guess what? you bet i can surf! (yep, that's me on the pic)
siargao is the surfing capital of the philippines. the island, which is 437 sq km in land area facing the pacific ocean became popular not only to local surfers but to foreigners as well. according to the "native delicacies" (term used by a friend to mean hot local surfers), surfing competitions only started 1996 which was 3 years after it was featured in surfer magazine.
although there are several other good waves in siargao, cloud9 is the best site to do surfing. you can choose between amateur and professional waves that are easily accessible without a boat. this is where competitions take place every september.
maybe we're going back this september (crossing fingers for zero fare trips from cebu pacific). we want to do it the whole day next time and maybe ride on bigger waves? we'll see. as long as ignacio, shorty (i don't know his real name; just nicknamed as such because of an encounter with a friend, which cannot be disclosed here) and alex (jericho rosales' swing for a surfing movie in the philippines) are still willing to teach us, then we're surfing in siargao.
