at 3:18 am, august 01, former president cory aquino succumbed to colon cancer after more than a year of battle. according to reports she died of cardiac respiratory arrest while on the 5th sorrowful mystery of the rosary. the people power icon was 76 years old when she passed on.
i was only 4 years old during the philippine revolution, so i had no clue what was happening then when she was installed as the 11th and 1st woman president of the country during that nonviolent street demonstration.

i learned about her death when i logged in to facebook early today and saw several of my friends' status saying so. i turned on the television to confirm and it's all over the news. it was noynoy, cory's eldest son, who gave the official statement, teary eyed with voice shaking mid-sentence.
so much has been said about cory aquino in the interviews i watched. things i wouldn't have learned if she hadn't died yet. facts like the number of coup d'eta she had to overcome, that she had loyal politician friends, that she was a common parishioner and that ninoy wrote a beautiful poem for her put into music by jose mari chan. then they had this special video compilation of her with magkaisa (unite) as the background music, which made hair all over my body stand up.
no doubt, cory aquino became an instrument of peace and democracy during those years. for that she will always be remembered.
