in my life

i am not really a movie person, so much more tagalog. but in my life, i really wanted to see. not because this is vilma santos' comeback movie but because for the first time, a gay themed movie was advertised so openly in the philippines. i got the chance to watch in my life before everybody else did, sureseats at ayala, first showing.

luis manzano, who's been rumored gay ever since played john lloyd cruz' partner. vilma santos, luis' mother in real life acted the same role but this time as a short tempered librarian. although there were other characters in the movie, the story revolved mainly around these three. i'd love to talk so much about how the story went but that would kill everyone's excitement. so i'd rather keep this to a review like entry.

in my life wasn't entirely dramatic, in fact there were funny moments, mostly reminding me of my mother. but i can't help but feel sorry for john lloyd's character. he moved me. he was the character i can relate to. the line,
tita, ano bang naging kasalanan ko sayo. all i did was love your son at pati na rin ikaw. minahal kita, pero ang damot damot niyo...
made me bawl my eyes out. i literally felt my heart crushed on the floor. i wanted to just hug him and tell him it'll be alright. gawd! that's how effective his acting was! very subtle, effortless...

so was vilma santos', very realistic and natural in her portrayal of the role. the personality of her character was very distinct, even the mannerisms and word use. "gets ko talaga (i really get it)"

luis' role, although significant in the story, was just plain. he improved according to friends, but i can't say because i haven't seen any of his past movies. then again, playing a gay role and kissing john lloyd in the movie is an achievement, so i guess i'll just give him credit.

there's really no excuse to miss in my life. let a story of how the love of two men, teaches a woman to move on and live again be told.

breakfast at jacobo's

my brother, deney, treated us to breakfast at jacobo's. it's his 26th birthday today.

the restaurant is located at the back of tara's cafe in skyrise 3.
i have heard of people talking about this place and a first time visit deserves a review.

for a php100 per person buffet meal, here's what you can have:

one round of iced tea
unlimited servings of rice
scrambled egg
ham (looked tasty but could've been tastier when eaten)
chorizzo with a spicy bite
eggplant omelette
tuna (too dry for my taste buds)
non-purefoods hotdog
corned beef
toasted bread

on some days, they serve pancakes and tocino.

you can't really expect much from a php100 eat all you can meal. over-all it was just ok for me, that's 5 out of 10. but i probably will go back to grab another breakfast when i need to connect to the internet early in the morning. it seemed like there is wifi within the vicinity. that should be their selling point. which means they will have to install several electric sockets coz i didn't see one near any of the tables.

though the meal wasn't really inviting, what counts is we got together for my bros birthday.

australian hostel experience

hostels are not really big in the philippines that's why i haven't really heard of such until this year, when toni and i made our itinerary for hongkong. if you're on a budget, a hostel is the best option for accommodation. this is also where backpackers flock, which means more friends to meet.

racism irony

weeks before flying to the land down under, a warning was brought about by a colleague. he said his cousins couldn't stand australia because of racism. i was too excited to pay much attention to that and never really thought id encounter such in just few days.

in sydney, second day into the trip, while walking towards the bus stop near elizabeth street, we heard somebody shouting. "fuck you asian whore. go back to indonesia." across the street, a white man alongside a group of students, were trying to make their way to our side. two of the students were asian looking. the man continued yelling derogatory remarks, so loud that we could still hear him even if we were about 15 meters away.

i wanted to shout back at him. an indian looking guy nearby also wanted to retort but his girlfriend stopped him. i guess all asians within the vicinity somehow had a reaction. the racist disappeared into the underground walkway before somebody could make a move.

i remembered the warning and i contemplated on whether or not i can take some. the racial attack, shocked me. but nothing can be more shocking than seeing the man again upon boarding the bus. saw him pick up and smoked the cigarette butt that an "asian" threw to the side.
